AB The objective of this project is the production of pedagogical materials
to be used in STD/AIDS education programs directed toward children and
adolescents from low income and high-risk backgrounds. Using a
participative education process, both the youth and the health educator
team were involved in the planning, execution and evaluation of the
materials developed. In the first phase, a comic book about sexuality,
STDs and AIDS was produced, incorporating the youth's language and
values. In the second phase, an educational video is being made based
upon a story developed collectively by the youth. In the final phase,
teams of the youth and health educators will use these materials in
prevention/education activities in institutions, schools, and various
communities, including the streets. This experience shows that health
education and prevention programs can be more effective when built upon
the active participation of the target population to whom they are
directed. As a result, governmental programs should focus more attention
on horizontal and transversal, rather than vertical, intervention
strategies.
